This breed is known for its lustrous golden coat and because of the density of the coat, Goldens must be regularly groomed and trimmed. The undercoat, because of its water repellent nature, is extremely thick and must therefore not be allowed to matt, causing unnecessary suffering to the animal. The feathers on his front legs should be trimmed regularly as should the hair between his pads. The hair on the back legs up the hocks needs to be cut close and, again, the feathering under the tail should be trimmed. The tail should be trimmed in a crescent shape. The topcoat on the body only needs brushing and can be either flat or wavy. Whilst the length of the coat attracts water and mud, this is easily cleaned off once the coat has dried
The puppies can grow very quickly, and their weight can soon be too heavy for the speed of which their bones are growing so do not allow them too much free-range exercise until older. Keep exercise age appropriate and allow the puppy time to sleep in between plays. Adult Goldens require exercise of moderate length every day to stay fit, this includes walks and physical activity such as water play where possible.
Goldens are extremely intelligent dogs however are also worriers. Never treat them harshly or harm can be done to their accommodating and sensitive natures. Great care should be taken during training, ensuring sensitivity is always maintained. They love to give and receive affection and do best with positive, reward-based training.
Goldens are generally a healthy breed and can be expected to live 12 to 16 years with proper care. Keep them on a good diet and provide enough exercise to maintain good muscle tone, be vigilant about keeping him from becoming overweight, and monitoring his activities to prevent injury. Goldens can get ear infections if their ears aren’t kept clean and dry due to their love of water. Your Puppy comes with two months Pet Insurance with Knose Insurance.
